The mapping process
Partners Small World Theatre, spacetocreate, Save the Teifi and West Wales Rivers Trust created a rolling two-year programme in the schools and communities of Cilgerran, Aberteifi and Llandudoch. Led by the creative organisations, the community events and festivals used the themes from The People's Plan to map the river, start conversations and co-create the visual content for a contemporary folk map and website.
Building on the themes from the people's plan, and two years' community engagement, spacetocreate worked in a creative collaboration with graphic designer Heidi Baker, to develop the concept and design of the Llais yr Afon contemporary folk map, giving a voice to the river, the people who care for it, and creating a legacy for future generations.
Once completed, the new map, alongside a copy of the Idris Mathias map and accompanied by a series of colourful banners and postcards, was toured around the schools and communities that had been involved in creating it.
llaisyrafon.cymru is a digital record of the project aiming to preserve the outputs in a way that is accessible to all. The website showcases the contemporary map and contains themed galleries of the creative output contributed by the many hundreds of people who participated. Created locally, by web developer Steve Knight, the site is designed to be accessible, and easy to host/maintain in the long term.
